Description

New River Outfitters is the oldest, most experienced, and most complete outfitter on the New River in North Carolina. Since 1976 we have been helping individuals, families, and groups enjoy the beautiful New River by canoe. We use only the best equipment and strive to give prompt, courteous service to give you the most enjoyment. When you plan your trip on the New this year, be sure to schedule it with the best - New River Outfitters.

The beautiful North and South Forks of the New River flow gently for over 100 miles through the forested mountains and pastoral valleys of northwestern North Carolina. They join just south of the Virginia state line, and the New River flows on northward through Virginia.

Because of its great scenic beauty and recreational value, a 26 mile stretch of the South Fork has been designated a National Scenic River and has been set aside for canoeing. These upper reaches of the New River are shallow and, unlike most mountain rivers, have only mild rapids. The combination of spectacular mountain scenery and relatively easy paddling makes the New River an ideal canoe stream for inexperienced paddlers, large groups, families, and canoe camping.

Many people who have never been in a canoe before have enjoyed an outing on the New River, and many come back again and again to enjoy its beauty and tranquility. If you have never been before, make this the year you Experience a New River Adventure. If you have enjoyed a New River trip before, come back again and try a different section of the river. Relax, swim, fish, enjoy the scenery. The New is a national treasure you can experience and enjoy.

Canoe Trips

Your Canoe Trip:
includes top quality canoes, paddles, life jackets, and transportation either to your put-in point or back from your take-out point. You can choose the length of your trip - a brief sampler of an hour, a short trip of 2 to 3 hours, an intermediate trip of 3 to 5 hours, or an all day trip of 6 or more hours. Most people stop to eat along the river, and you can bring your own lunch, buy lunch fixings at our store, or order a lunch from our deli in advance.

Overnight Canoe Trips:
of 2 to 6 days are also available and are an ideal way to escape from civilization with minimal travel and at a low cost. Our location within the center of the designated "scenic section" of the New River, gives you the best access to all state park sites, as well as, several privately owned campgrounds.

What to Bring:
Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting wet and shoes with good gripping soles such as tennis shoes or river sandals. Since mountain weather is unpredictable, be prepared for hot sun or occasional showers. A small cooler is handy for carrying lunch, drinks, and other items, and will fit in the center of the canoe. Don't forget a change of clothes for after your trip.

Tubing Trips:
ranging from 1 to 5 hours are also available. Tubing trips offer an even slower pace than canoes, as well as the perfect way for you to cool off on a hot summer day. Your tubing trip includes innertube, life jacket, and transportation to your put in point.

Canoeing the New is a great Family Activity:
The New is a gentle river and the most popular in the Southern Appalachians for family recreation. Children are welcome and are provided with childsized life preservers. Children under twelve go FREE when riding in the middle of a canoe with two adults.
